Deputy commissioner (DC) Mohammed Shayin on Wednesday passed orders for shifting firecracker shops in Sector 26 grain market. There are around 10 shops selling firecrackers there, which have now been relocated to Sector 28, a designated place for sale of firecrackers.
The move comes after Shayin on Tuesday conducted a surprise check at the shops to ensure that regulations were being followed.
During the raid, the DC found that shopkeepers had opened stalls behind their showrooms and encroached upon the road. Therefore, he passed orders of these firecracker stalls.
Talking to HT, Shayin said there was nothing more important than public safety and the firecracker stalls were posing a great risk. He further said that such steps would be taken in other markets also.
Welcoming the decision, Sector-26 market committee secretary GR Pillai termed the move as the right step. “The shopkeepers have been shifted to a designated place, which is beneficial for both traders and public,” said Pillai.
The DC has also constituted three teams to check vendors selling firecrackers without licence.
The teams, headed by sub-divisional magistrates (SDMs) of south, central and east zones respectively, are being directed to carry out surprise checks in different sectors and villages of the city. The DC has directed the teams to carry out regular checks and seize material of vendors selling crackers and other related material without licence.
An executive magistrate, an inspector of enforcement wing and one inspector of municipal corporation were attached with each team for raids.
SDM (south) Kashish Mittal, along with his team, checked the firecracker stalls and shops in Dadumajra, Maloya, Palsora, Burail and Kajheri.
The team seized material of five shops in Dadumajra, Maloya and Burail, who were selling firecrackers without licence. SDM (east) Danish Ashraf led his team to conduct checks in Manimajra and Sector 26 grain market, while SDM (central) Tanvi Garg carried out checks with her team in Sectors 15, 16, 22 and 23, where none of the shops were found without licence.
The DC has warned the unauthorised vendors to refrain from such activities, else strict action would be taken against them apart from seizure of their material.
