The Delhi-Hoshiarpur weekly express train which started on October 2 last year will run daily from December 6. Union minister of state Vijay Sampla and Rajya Sabha member Avinash Rai Khanna will flag it off from the city railway station.

Presently, the train departs from the Old Delhi station at 11.5 pm every Saturday and reaches Hoshiarpur at 7.10 am the next day. It returns every Sunday at 10.30 pm to reach Delhi at 7.10 am the next day. The train halts at Jalandhar Cantonment, Phagwara, Ludhiana, Ambala Cantonment and Panipat. It has one AC II tier, two AC III tier, five sleeper class and six second class coaches besides two second class disabled friendly coaches-cum- luggage van.

MP Sampla said a long-standing demand of the people of the area had been fulfilled. He expressed hope that the daily train would boost trade and tourism. He claimed that it was the result of persistent efforts by Khanna and him. His statement, however, elicited sharp reaction from former minister of state for health and family welfare Santosh Chowdhary, who said it was she who had tried hard to get the facility for people of her constituency.

“Even after the change in government, I kept in constant touch with the ministry of railways and ensured that the weekly train ran daily,” she claimed.
