The strike of Municipal Corporation Safai Karamchari Union on Monday entered the seventh day, much to the annoyance of residents. With 140 garbage disposal vehicles keeping off the roads for the past week, garbage has piled up on roads and outside sehaj safai kendras.
Union president Krishan Kumar Chadha said, "We were to throw garbage in front of offices of UT officials on Monday, but did not after an assurance from the MC joint commissioner. He has assured us that our main demand of regularisation of 134 daily wagers was approved, and we will get notification on Monday itself. But no officer turned up as of 5pm. We will now throw garbage outside the offices on Tuesday."
On the other hand, MC joint commissioner Rajeev Gupta said, "The file of their main demand has been approved and UT finance secretary was to sign it. Hopefully, it will be done by Tuesday and we will hand it over to them the same day."
Meanwhile, city mayor Poonam Sharma on Monday requested the UT administrator for early notification of the regularisation of recommended posts of safai karmacharis. She also appealed to the sanitation workers to end their strike and join their duties.
The main demands of the protesters include regularisation of 134 daily wagers, a salary hike of Rs 10,600, jobs to family members of the deceased workers and promotion of literate sanitation workers to the post of clerks.
