For years, it has been University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET) which would decide the fate of the candidates in the fray for the Panjab University Campus Students’ Council (PUCSC) elections.
With the Student Organisation of India (SOI) and National Students Union of India (NSUI) fielding their candidates from UIET, those studying law will be playing a key role in winning the PUCSC polls.
After UIET which has 2,545 votes, the University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS) and department of laws combined together have 2,267 votes. But no major party has a candidate from the department of laws, except Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).
Student leaders maintain that having a presidential candidate from the department is an advantage for any party. During the last elections, both PUSU and SOPU had fielded candidates from the law department.
After NSUI and SOI, the Panjab University Student Union (PUSU) is the third major player this time and has considerable influence in departments of sciences with over 2,000 votes.
But it has also fielded a candidate from bio-medical sciences department.
“In UIET, the fight is between NSUI and SOI. But strongest section of PUSU is in sciences department. So a lot would depend which way the UILS and law students vote,” said an NSUI leader.
As per the voters list prepared by the Panjab University, UIET has the highest number of voters with 2,545 votes followed by the department of laws (1,252) and the University Institute of Legal Studies (1,015) and UICET (701 votes).
