A local court on Friday granted bail to conman and realtor Devinder Singh Gill, alias Thapa, in a rape case registered against him at the Chandimandir police station on July 20.

The complainant (27), a resident of Chandigarh, was a former associate of Gill.

In her complaint, she had told the police that she came in contact with Gill in 2008 and he sexually abused her on the pretext of marriage from 2009 onwards.

She was taken to various places and was sexually abused, she had alleged, adding that he took her to a hotel at Morni T-Point last time.

After Gill allegedly refused to marry her, she lodged the rape complaint.

A case of rape, unnatural act and cheating was registered against him.

He was arrested on August 2 from Gurgaon.

The woman had also filed a complaint against Gill for cheating in April this year and a theft case was got registered against him in August last year.

Gill submitted before the court through his lawyer that in the earlier complaints against him she never mentioned sexual abuse and the rape complaint was an afterthought.

The police opposed the bail application on the grounds that he could threaten the witnesses.

Gill is facing a cheating case in SAS Nagar on the complaint of Yashpal Gupta, a Delhi resident, and is currently in judicial custody.

He had been booked in two cases of cheating in Chandigarh and SAS Nagar.
