Despite desperate attempts, efforts by the Bharatiya Janata Party’s local unit to persuade veteran leader Harmohan Dhawan to go along with the party’s decision to give the ticket to Kirron Kher have came to a naught on Thursday.
After visiting a Sector-34 gurudwara on Thursday, Kher headed straight for Dhawan’s home in Sector 9. She kept reporters waiting at the BJP’s Sector 33 office for over an hour, hoping Dhawan might join her at the conference. She was accompanied by local BJP unit chief Sanjay Tandon and senior BJP leader Satyapal Jain.
Kher spent about half an hour at Dhawan’s house, trying to pacify the veteran who has a strong support base in the city’s slum colonies. The former MP and civil aviation minister was a strong contender for the ticket from the city along with Tandon and Jain.
If sources close to the party are to be believed, his candidature was almost certain and was changed by the party leadership at the last minute before the public announcement for reasons best known to it.
Soon after her candidature was announced, BJP workers protested and her arrival was met with black flags and eggs thrown on husband Anupam.
