In a unique initiative, a differently-abled rickshaw puller Om Prakash was given the honour of inaugurating a Rs 1.30 crore road carpeting project in the city on Sunday.
The Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) has started road carpeting on the dividing road of Sectors 13 and 14.
Amarendra Singh, the officer on special duty (OSD) to the chief minister at his camp office in Karnal, was invited to inaugurate the development project. However, Singh called in a rickshaw puller who was passing by and requested him to chair the function to which he readily accepted.
As per the custom, Om Prakash cracked a coconut to start the development activity.
Amazed over the honour given to him, which is otherwise confined to the dignitaries from the political class or bureaucracy, Om Prakash said that he had never heard a poor man given such an opportunity.
Meanwhile, the CM’s OSD said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was a strong votary of inclusive empowerment. He said that the initiative would also help in winning confidence of general public that it was not a government of elites.
“It is the vision of the BJP and Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar that the poorest person of the society be linked to the governance. I will try to ensure that every public utility development project in Karnal is inaugurated by a common man and not any dignitary,” he said.
