Muslim-majority Kashmir, where crimes against women are rarely reported, witnessed its third case of rape in a month - this time in south Kashmir's Shopian district.
The newest victim is 13 years old, mentally and physically challenged. She was abducted and sexually assaulted by her neighbour, 25-year-old Imtiyaz Ahmad Bhat, last week. But the matter was reported only on July 14, since the girl was unable to convey the ordeal to her family.
"Suffering from polio, she can't even talk properly," said station house officer Shafaqat Attar. "The family could understand what she was saying only after her father arrived."
Medical test has confirmed rape and the girl appeared before a court thereafter. Bhat was arrested on July 16 and shifted to the central jail Srinagar.
Last week, a girl was gang raped in Baramulla district in north Kashmir. On June 1, a five-year-old girl was raped by a 14-year-old boy in central Kashmir's Budgam district.
