In a Diwali bonanza to the Chandigarh administration employees, the Chandigarh administration on Saturday announced an increase of 7% dearness allowance (DA) just 10 days before the festival of lights.
The dearness allowance, which was 65% of the basic salary, has been hiked to 72%. The increase will be effective from July 1.
Employees had been raising their demands to increase the DA for the past some time.
Generally, it was the Punjab government in the past to hike the DA first, which was then followed by the Chandigarh administration. However, this time the Chandigarh administration took the initiative to announce the increase in DA before the decision of the Punjab government.
Welcoming the announcement, Chandigarh Engineering Department Workers' Union president Balwinder Singh said, "This has come as a Diwali gift for the employees. We were raising our demands to increase the DA for the past many months."
