The Punjab Civil Medical Services (PCMS) Association is contemplating a statewide strike from Monday against the state government's recent decision of transferring 523 specialist doctors.

While talking to Hindustan Times on Thursday, Dr RS Buttar, patron of the association, said that looking at the seriousness of the issue, they were planning to go on strike from Monday. He said the final decision on this would be taken at the state-level meeting in Ludhiana.

"We know doctors shouldn't go on strike as it goes against the larger interest of society, but we are left with no other option by the government. It is an unprecedented decision," said Dr Buttar.

He said the way doctors had resented the move, nothing less than calling off all transfers would be acceptable. He said the decision had been imposed on the doctors without any prior consultation.

In a separate press release, the PCMS Specialist Doctors Association on Thursday decried the mass transfer, saying it would cripple medical services in certain places.
