District and sessions judge Anita Chaudhary on Monday awarded life imprisonment to domestic help convicted for murdering a 65-year-old woman.

Convict Akhilesh Paswan was earlier held guilty on April 5 for stabbing Shanti Devi with scissors number of times on the night of August 20, 2011.

The accused was working with the family for more than two years. At the time of murder, Shanti Devi was alone at her house, while her daughter-in-law Isha and granddaughters Garima and Pratibha had gone out for a walk. The accused had stabbed Shanti Devi with an intention to commit a theft.

He later attacked Isha, Garima and Pratibha and fled. While Shanti Devi was declared brought dead at the hospital, Isha and her two girls received stitches on their heads and hands. One of the girls also underwent surgery.

Paswan was sentenced to seven years' rigorous imprisonment for murder attempt on the two girls while he was sentenced to two years in jail for injuring Isha. All the jail terms would run concurrently. He was also fined Rs 10,000, which he could not pay.

Paswan tried hard to prove himself a juvenile, but failed. The prosecution contested his claims of being a minor. Finally, a report by the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, nailed his lie, finding that he was an adult at the time of the crime.
