The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Friday alleged that the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) were politicising the killing of two Ludhiana youths for their vested political interests, while asking them to halt their protest as the Punjab government had already meted out exemplary punishment to the guilty police officials.

In a statement here, SAD general secretary Maheshinder Singh Grewal said it was strange that the Congress and the AAP had joined hands, adding that this was being done “out of frustration to derive political mileage from this tragic incident”.

Grewal asked Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Partap Singh Bajwa to clarify whether the dismissal of the police personnel directly involved in the shooting and the suspension of the Khanna senior superintendent of police (SSP) was not exemplary punishment.

“I am sure Bajwa would remember that during the erstwhile Congress regime (in Punjab), of which he was a part, clean chit was given to criminals even before investigations could be conducted into the cases,” the SAD leader said.

He said state home minister Sukhbir Singh Badal had given clear directions to the police force that no one was above the law. “It is because of this that strict disciplinary action has always been taken in case of any misbehaviour on the part of the cops,” he added.
