The trend of venturing into film production is catching up real fast among the current brigade of Bollywood stars, with actors such as Anushka Sharma, Ranbir Kapoor, Ameesha Patel, Tusshar Kapoor and Shilpa Shetty Kundra giving it a try. “Actors can easily get their colleagues to work in their film at a lesser price. Often, they collaborate with big studios, which minimises the overall risk. Also, instead of charging a huge acting fee, they take a percentage of the film’s profit,” says trade analyst Taran Adarsh. We bring you some who’ve crossed over.
Ameesha Patel: The 37-year-old is venturing into production with Desi Magic, in which she will be seen in a double role. "When producing a film, an actor can create a project based on his likes and preferences, instead of just signing a film that doesn’t offer a challenging role."
Anushka sharma: Anushka, 25, is co-producing filmmaker Navdeep Singh next film, titled NH 10. "I’m thrilled to get this chance so early in my career. I couldn’t have found a better project than NH-10 to kickstart this new phase in my film journey."
Shilpa Shetty: The 38-year-old’s production debut, Dishkiyaaoon, is set in the backdrop of Mumbai underworld. "Imagine me making a film on Mumbai underworld, it sounds bizarre! Films are too time consuming, a producer’s job is far easier."
Ranbir Kapoor: The actor, 31, is donning the producer’s hat for his upcoming film, Jagga Jasoos. A big production house is reportedly pumping in R100 crore for the film. "I used to think production is not my place but now ... well, yes, I have turned producer for Jagga Jasoos, in which I play a 17-year-old. I want to collaborate with directors as a producer."
Tusshar Kapoor: Tusshar, 36, is co-producing his maiden project with fashion designer Shabina Khan. "Being a business student, I always wanted to venture into production. It is too early to talk about the project. All I can tell you is that I’m not acting in it."
