Following a complaint lodged by a local resident, the police filed charges of molestation and dowry harassment against her fiancé, who is a resident of Delhi. The man, Vikram Khattar, who is yet to be arrested, allegedly demanded a BMW or Audi from the girl’s parents, according to the complaint.

Vikram got engaged to the woman on October 6 last year at a local hotel. The woman’s father had spent Rs 3 lakh on the engagement ceremony and had given Rs 93,000 as ‘shagun’ (gift) to Vikram and his parents.

The woman alleged Vikram molested her on several occasions and even tried to persuade her to develop physical relations with him on the grounds that they were engaged but she resisted his advances. She told the police his sole intention was to have an intimate relationship with her and to “play” with her future.

“During telephonic conversations, Vikram used to ask for a BMW or Audi as dowry. I always replied my family wasn’t in a position to meet his demand,” the girl said in her complaint.

She claimed her parents had also given gifts to Vikram’s family on Diwali.

On January 7, Vikram’s family called off the wedding on the excuse that Vikram was suffering from a life threatening disease.

However, the woman alleged that when his family came to know her parents could not afford to give him a luxury car, they cancelled the wedding without coming up with any medical report to support their claim. She alleged that to malign her image and of her family, a profile of a sex worker, along with six-seven profiles with her nickname and her picture also attached, was posted on her Facebook profile.

Following an inquiry into the allegations conducted by ACP Adarshdeep Singh on August 5, the police filed a case under sections 354A ( for making physical contact involving unwelcome and explicit sexual overtures), 406 (criminal breach of trust) of the IPC and 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, against Vikram and his father.

“We’re yet to apprehend the suspect,” said Sector 5 SHO inspector Baljeet Singh.
