Disappointed with the slow pace of investigation by Ludhiana police in Dr Supriya’s suicide case, the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) has summoned the director general of police, and the police commissioner and deputy commissioner of Ludhiana, on November 3.

Raj Kumar Verka, vice-chairman of the commission, said even when the bail application of two doctor colleagues of the victim named in the FIR has been rejected by the court, “police have not arrested the accused”. After the investigation, the police filed proceedings under section 174 of the CrPC, and later registered a case of abetment to suicide against Dr Puneet Punni and Dr Deepak Bhatt of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) in the case.

Hence, the NCSC has now summoned DGP Sumedh Singh Saini, Ludhiana police commissioner Pramod Ban and DCP Rajat Aggarwal at New Delhi.

The police have already told the commission that enough evidence was not there to arrest the doctors.

But Verka insisted that the commission would also seek a report from police in the case and try to know as to how the police have proceeded in the case.

Dr Supriya, who was a student of second year of MD in the department of paediatrics at DMCH, had committed suicide on September 29 at her hostel. She had also left a suicide note that was recovered by police.
