Dr Gurpreet Singh Wander

Dr Gurpreet Singh Wander, chief cardiologist, Hero DMC (Dayanand Medical College) Heart Institute, has been elected national president of the Association of Physicians of India (API).

Dr Wander is the second medical professional from the region -- earlier it was Prof KS Chugh in 1992 -- to be elected president of this body, which is the largest academic association of post-graduate physicians in medicine in the country. He was awarded the Dr BC Roy award in 2006 by the President and the K Saran national award in 2004 by the Indian Medical Association.

Dr Wander is keen to promote and encourage research among physicians and students so that doctors can find solutions to health problems that are peculiar to patients.

The API has a membership of 19,000 physicians and conducts activities such as holding an annual conference and bringing out a monthly journal.
