Taking strict note of the people drinking in the open in various market places and creating ruckus thereafter, the SAS Nagar police along with the traffic wing have launched a drive to check the menace.

The traffic wing of the SAS Nagar police have issued 25 challans in the last about a month and impounded some vehicles during the drive.

"We have launched a special drive to check drunken driving and drinking in the open. Most of the complaints are pouring in from the market areas of Phases 5, 7 and 3B2 where youths drink in parked vehicles, causing inconvenience to the residents," said Gurmeet Singh Sohal, in- traffic (Zone 2), SAS Nagar.

Apart from this, Mataur police team acting on one such complaint had rounded up a woman and her male friend, who claimed to be an advocate, for drinking in the parking lot on the back side of the Phase 7 market. No case was registered and the two were let off after a warning. After undergoing a medical examination, the duo tendered an undertaking of not to do the same in future. As per sources, the two had entered into an argument with the police.

Similarly, a youth of Bhagomajra was rounded up in Sohana for creating ruckus in a drunken state. His accomplices, however, managed to escape from the spot. He too was let off after a warning by the police.
