The 35-year-old mechanic whose body was found at Shivalik Park in Manimajra on Friday morning, was murdered by a 29-year-old man after he beat up the latter for having an affair with a girl he knew, the police said on Sunday.
The accused, identified as Lakhmir Singh alias Meeka, a resident of Nagla Mohalla, Manimajra, was arrested on Sunday. He works as a private driver.
The police said Lakhmir and the victim, Parmod, a resident of Shanti Nagar, Manimajra, used to go to a Ruhani Satsang Ashram in SAS Nagar and got to know each other there. Parmod was friends with a female vegetable vendor and considered her daughter his sister, who also visited the ashram and had relations with Lakhmir.
Assistant superintendent of police (ASP) (east) Parvinder Singh said during interrogation, Lakhmir revealed that Parmod had an altercation with him a few days ago over him having relations with his friend’s daughter. The altercation turned into a scuffle, and Parmod beat up Lakhmir at the ashram. He left after threatening him of dire consequences if he saw him with the girl again.
Piqued over the humiliation meted out by Parmod, Lakhmir hatched a plan to murder the former, the ASP said, while adding that the accused waited for Parmod to visit a vegetable market in Manimajra on March 19. As he reached the spot, Lakhmir invited him inside the Shivalik Park for some discussion, and stabbed him to death.
Investigating into the case, the police reached the ashram and got to know that Parmod had beat up Lakhmir recently, following which they zeroed in on him. During interrogation, the driver confessed to have murdered Parmod, the ASP claimed.
He added that the police had procured the accused’s remand to recover the weapon used in the crime. A case of murder is already registered.
