A day after a 16-year-old victim of sexual harassment from Punjab's Sangrur died at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, a minor girl from Karnal was rushed to the hospital on Wednesday after she was allegedly sexually abused and thrown off a roof by her drug addict neighbour.
The condition of the 12-year-old victim, who has sustained serious head injuries and is unconscious, is stated to be critical. The incident took place on Tuesday night.
Accused Sandeep Mann, a resident of Ramesh Nagar locality, was arrested by the police within hours of the crime. The girl was first taken to the trauma centre at Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College (KCGMC) in Karnal from where she was referred to the PGI.
The girl's parents hail from Midnapore in West Bengal and have been working as daily wagers in Karnal for the past few years. At the time of the incident, the victim was alone at her house.
Karnal superintendent of police Pankaj Nain said it seemed that the girl was lured by the accused on some pretext and then sexually abused. The medical examination of the girl confirmed the assault, said the SP.
"Preliminary investigations revealed that when the girl raised an alarm, Mann thrashed her badly. As the accused feared of being caught, he pushed the girl off the roof. She suffered severe head injuries and is unconscious," the SP said on Wednesday evening.
The accused was booked under attempt to murder and a case under the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) has also been registered against him.
