Drug peddler gets death sentence

"Drug trafficking, trade and consumption are eating into the vitals of society and this needs to be dealt with heavy hands," ruled additional district and sessions judge, Shalini Nagpal, on Monday while handing out death penalty to Tarn Taran resident, Balwinder Singh, convicted under the NDPS (Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) act.

The court awarded death penalty to Balwinder Singh taking into consideration that he was already convicted under NDPS act, while his aide Satnam Singh, a jail warden posted at Sangrur, was awarded 12 years imprisonment.

The order awarding capital punishment, reads, " Drug consumption paralyses the mind, cripples the body and retards the intellect. Drug dependency weakens the morale and character of the youth and ultimately growth of the nation. The court cannot be a silent spectator to the grave situation and drug trafficking must be dealt with heavy hands."

The order further reads, "Convict Satnam Singh is a government servant who was working as a warden in Punjab jail posted at Sangrur. The state of Punjab is in grip of a drug hurricane and menace of drugs is widespread amongst jail inmates."

"Taking into consideration the fact that Balwinder Singh, has already been convicted in another case under the NDPS act, he was awarded capital punishment," said special public prosecutor Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Kailash Chander.

The case had made headlines, when the NCB sleuths in 2005 had arrested Satnam Singh, warden in Sangrur jail with four kilograms of contraband. On receiving information that a drug peddler was coming to Chandigarh to supply heroin following which a naka was put up on the dividing road of sector 24/25 dividing road.

NCB had arrested Satnam Singh from the spot with the contraband while Balwinder Singh had managed to flee taking advantage of the dark. Balwinder Singh was later arrested in Amritsar in 2007 with two kilograms of heroin. Balwinder Singh, who is presently lodged in Amritsar jail serving sentence of ten years imprisonment.
