The Punjab and Haryana high court has directed the Punjab government to constitute an officers' committee so as to examine the feasibility of suggestions given by petitioners to check drug smuggling inside jails.
The division bench comprising acting chief justice Jasbir Singh and justice Rakesh Kumar Jain, while hearing a bunch of public interest litigations, directed the state government to submit a detailed report in the court on the next date of hearing, October 4.
The directions came during resumed hearing of petitions filed by advocate HC Arora, Jalandhar resident Shashi Sharma and Ropar jail inmate Tarlochan Singh. Arora had requested the bench to issue directions to the Punjab government to examine suggestions made by him so as to stop the supply of narcotic drugs inside jails. Sharma had highlighted drug menace and lack of medical aid in the Kapurthala jail. Tarlochan had raised the issue of easy availability of drugs in the Rupnagar jail.
