Forty-eight Punjabis reached New Delhi from strifetorn Iraq on Monday evening. They were taken to Gurdwara Bangla Sahib and Gurdwara Rakabganj Sahib in the Capital. These Punjabis arrived in two batches of 24 each.

On Sunday evening, 92 Indians who arrived from Iraq were accommodated in the two gurdwaras managed by the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC).

Of the 92, 84 are from Andhra Pradesh, four from Punjab, two from Tamil Nadu and one each from Haryana and West Bengal. DSGMC president Manjit Singh GK told HT that the gurdwara committee had started bus service from the international airport to various gurdwaras and most of those arriving from Iraq had no one to take prompt care of them.

“We are giving them food, medical aid, clothes, financial help and even arranging their journey to their native states,” GK added.

“We are also running a parallel service to help the evacuees. Initially, we were helping only Punjabis, but now we are assisting evacuees from various states,” he said.
