The Election Commission (EC) on Saturday clarified that it had no objection to the distribution of free textbooks to the students of government schools in Punjab for the academic session 2014-15 under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) and the department of social welfare programme.

Meanwhile, Punjab chief electoral officer (CEO) VK Singh said on Saturday that the nomination papers for the Lok Sabha elections would not be presented to the returning officer on April 8, since the Punjab government had declared it a public holiday under the Negotiable Instrument Act of 1881 on account of Ram Navami.

An official spokesman said all members of the medical staff, including doctors, nurses and ANMs (auxiliary nurses and midwives) will not be given poll duty, as EC had exempted them already from the task.
