EC says no to bulk SMSes 48 hours prior to polls

chandigarh Updated: Jun 18, 2012 21:06 IST

The Election Commission of India has prohibited bulk political SMSes 48 hours before the day elections are scheduled to be held.

A spokesman of the office of chief electoral officer, Haryana, said on Monday that it would be brought to the notice of all concerned immediately, including mobile service providers in the state.

Regarding objectionable SMSes, he said violating the provision of election law, model code of conduct and EC's directions, the police authorities should advertise special mobile numbers on which the receiver of such SMSes could forward them along with the number of the sender of objectionable SMSes.

He said the police authorities would initiate appropriate inquiry and trace the original sender and take appropriate action under the relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code, Representation of the People Act, 1951, the Conduct of Election Rules, 1961, and any other law applicable in the case.
