The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced the schedule for summary revision of electoral rolls in Punjab and the task would be accomplished by January 1, 2015.
Announcing this on Monday, an official spokesperson of the office of chief electoral office (CEO), Punjab, said the process of summary revision had been initiated with a view to preparing accurate rolls, inclusive of all eligible persons.
Further in the process, the names of dead, shifted or otherwise disqualified electors are required to be deleted and particulars of other electors will be updated.
The spokesperson said that in this massive activity, the entire election machinery, starting with CEOs, district electoral officers (DEOs), electoral registration officers (EROs) and assistant electoral registration officers (AEROs) up to block-level officers (BLOs) and supervisors would take part.
The spokesperson said the ECI had issued directions to the state government not to transfer any officials connected with the exercise of revision of electoral rolls, like district education officers, deputy district election officers, EROs, and AEROs from their places of posting without concurrence of the election commission.
The commission has also restricted the deployment of such officials with the work relating to or connected to the revision of electoral rolls against whom the commission has recommended disciplinary action, against whom a criminal case is pending and such officials who were transferred during any previous revision of rolls or conduct of election inefficiency or wilfully violating the ECI directions.
