Efforts for TB control in Punjab yielding good results: Mittal

Punjab health and family welfare minister Madan Mohan Mittal claimed that efforts of health department for controlling tuberculosis in the state were yielding good results. He was addressing a state-level function on World TB day organised by the health department at Rupnagar on Sunday.

He said the number of patients suffering from TB and number of deaths due to TB had declined during the year 2012 as compared to 2011.

He said 40,931 patients were found to be suffering from TB in the state in the year 2011, out which 1,782 patients died. However, during the year 2012, the number of TB patients decreased to 39,685, out of which 1,322 patients died, Mittal added.

He said 13,788 Directly Observed Therapy (DOT) centres had been set up in the state for the treatment of TB patients.

He said Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) had selected 350 doctors, who would be posted in the government hospitals and health centres soon. Besides this 33 expert doctors had also been recruited through walk-in-interview, he added.

Mittal said the process of promotions of health officers was underway and would also be completed soon.

Rupnagar MLA Daljit Singh Cheema said the state government was fully committed for providing best health care facilities to the people.

State TB officer Dr Balbir Singh, civil surgeon Dr Rajnish Sood, assistant civil surgeon Dr Baljit Singh, district BJP president Parvesh Goyal, also spoke on the occasion.

Mittal honoured 15 NGOs, social workers and officers, for their contribution towards TB control programme on the occasion. He also gave away the grants for development activities to various panchayats, social organisations and clubs.

He inaugurated an exhibition on TB awareness on the occasion. He also flagged off a TB awareness rally taken out by the nursing students.
