A 60-year-old resident of Nada village lost her life when the autorickshaw in which she was travelling overturned at the Sector 40-56 roundabout on Tuesday.
Her neighbour, Jasbir Kaur, later filed a complaint with the police, stating she along with the deceased, Banto Devi, and four others had hired the auto to go to Daun in SAS Nagar.
“The autowallah was driving very rashly. We asked him to slow down but he didn’t listen,” she said.
According to the police, when the autorickshaw reached the roundabout the driver lost control of the vehicle and it turned turtle.
Onlookers called up the cops who arrived at the scene took the passengers, all of whom sustained injuries, to the Government Multispecialty Hospital in Sector 16.
Doctors there referred Banto, who had been critically hurt, to PGI where she was declared dead on arrival.
The auto driver, identified as Vikas Thakur, a resident of Nayagaon, has been arrested under Sections 279, 337 & 304 of the Indian Penal Code.
Pedestrian killed in hit and run
In another incident, a 48-year-old pedestrian was killed after being hit by a speeding vehicle at the Sector 36-42 roundabout.
He has been identified as Ramjeet Singh, a painter and resident of Sector 37.
“The police found some broken pieces of the vehicle at the accident scene and are trying to identify it. A case has been registered under Sections 279 & 304A of the Indian Penal Code,” said Sector 36 police station house officer Ram Dayal. He added investigations were on.
