Despite the scorching heat, local residents swamped the New Lake, Sector 42, Chandigarh, on Sunday morning to attend the weekly street event Raahgiri. An initiative by Chandigarh administration and traffic police in collaboration with EMBARQ India, and media partner Hindustan Times, Raahgiri is organised every Sunday to promote healthy lifestyle and remind the citizens to reclaim the streets as it belongs to them.
Numerous activities including Zumba, aerobics, dancing session, badminton, hula-hoop, skating and games were organised at the spot. But what made this Sunday’s event all the more special was an awareness programme on Thalassemia. Jan Jagrati, a civil society, organised the programme to commemorate the International Thalassemia Day, the highlights of which included a marathon as well as a walkathon of children suffering from Thalassemia. Besides, Avoid Accident, an NGO, in association of Bachpan organised a street play highlighting various road safety issues like importance of wearing helmet/seat belt, drunken driving, speeding, skipping red-light as well as underage driving.
Those present claimed that Raahgiri was a complete entertainment package, and a great outlet for fitness lovers.
