Under its ongoing campaign to check the menace of pilferage of power, Haryana power utilities detected 3,612 cases of theft of electricity and imposed penalty of Rs 38.40 crore on the erring consumers up to February in the current fiscal year.
An official spokesman said today that penalty of over Rs 4 lakh had been levied in 123 of these cases, which included industrial and non-domestic connections.
The amount of penalty exceeded Rs 50,000 in 1,713 cases of theft of electricity and unauthorized extension of load. The electricity supply of the erring consumers had been disconnected immediately as per the existing instructions.
Special checking of 15,694 consumer premises was carried out by targeting high loss feeders.
It was observed that the consumers involved in theft of electricity had been stealing power by directly tapping supply lines, using magnets for stopping energy recording meters, tampering with meter seals and other unauthorised means.
The meter terminal cover seals or the meter seals were also found missing, broken or tampered with in some of these cases, he added.
