A local court on Tuesday granted bail to all five accused arrested in connection with the suicide by excise and taxation officer (ETO) Ranjit Singh after he was falsely implicated in a fake vigilance trap.
The court on Tuesday granted bail to superintendent of police (SP) Amandeep Kaur, who was earlier posted with the Punjab vigilance bureau (VB), head constable Harminder Singh and traders Rajinder Singh, Rajiv Sood and Paramjit Singh, who acted as complainants in the fake VB trap against Ranjit Singh against bail bonds of Rs 50,000 each.
"The case was not properly investigated. The persons were falsely implicated in the case, which is just to cover up the ongoing scam in the excise and taxation department, which she (Amandeep Kaur) had laid hands on," said defence counsel GS Kaura, while talking about the grounds on which the bail was sought. He said bail bonds of Rs 50,000 each had been furnished.
The SAS Nagar police, following a court order in August 2012, had booked Amandeep and others. They were booked for abetting the suicide by the ETO, besides for other offences, in the FIR registered at the Phase-1 police station, SAS Nagar. Ranjit Singh was falsely implicated in March 2011 and had committed suicide a month later while on bail.
SP Amandeep Kaur had surrendered before the court on January 15, and since was lodged in the Patiala jail along with the other accused, who, too, were in judicial custody since their arrest.
The case will now come up for hearing on April 2.
Meanwhile, reacting to the bail, Manjit Kaur, widow of Ranjit Singh, said, "It is unfortunate that those responsible for my husband's death have been granted bail even before the court begins trial in the case."
Kaur told HT, "The accused pose a threat to my life as they will try to eliminate me."
