A 29-year-old youth, found murdered at Behlopur village in Kharar on Monday, was allegedly killed by his former girlfriend and her husband, police said on Tuesday.

Shallu and her husband Jagtar Singh, residents of Hasanpur village in Ludhiana district, were arrested for the murder of Jasbir Singh, a resident of Nurpur Bedi village in Rupnagar district, on Tuesday. Police tracked down the couple after going through the call record of Jasbir's mobile number.

SAS Nagar senior superintendent of police (SSP) Gupreet Singh Bhullar said the duo had decided to murder Jasbir as he had been troubling Shallu since she had got married last year. Bhullar said that when Shallu's husband came to know of the past, the couple decided to eliminate Jasbir.

On Sunday, Jagtar and Shallu had come to attend a marriage at Balongi and had planned the murder in advance. Shallu called on Jasbir's mobile phone and asked him to come to meet her husband at Balongi. When Jasbir came to meet Shallu and Jagtar, the duo took him to a secluded place in Behlolpur village, where they murdered him with bricks, Bhullar said.

Bhullar claimed that the couple had confessed to the crime during interrogation. Jagtar and Shallu will be produced in court on Wednesday.

Jasbir's body was found at Behlolpur village on Monday. Police had identified the deceased from his debit card. Police said Jasbir was unemployed and planning to immigrate abroad. Jasbir' father owns a bicycle repair shop in Nurpur Bedi. Jasbir's brother Sarabjeet Singh, the complainant in the case, was to get married on Wednesday.
