Ex-serviceman becomes role model for others

Prem Singh (72), an ex-serviceman of the Dugha village has become a source of inspiration for others not only in his village but other parts of the district. After his retirement from army, he switched over to selling of milk and growing vegetables.

Now he has become self-sufficient and has been providing employment to eight other persons of the area by selling off seasonal vegetables being grown in his own fields.

Though in the beginning, he faced problems due to bad weather and other teething problems, yet once he approached the government agencies that provided him one lakh rupees to install the tube well and a vermin compost unit in his fields.

He has been sowing vegetables of various varieties in his fields measuring about twenty-five kanals and getting adequate income for him and his employees.

Prem Singh says that with help of his labourers he has been growing tomatoes, potatoes, cucumber, french beans, cauliflower and sells them in the local vegetable market.

He claims that he earns about three lakh rupees per annum from the sale of vegetables after meeting out other expenses needed for the growth of vegetables and salary of the staff.

With his hard working and tireless efforts, he has been able to manage the affairs of the family in an efficient manner. He has also started a computer centre for one of his sons. His other son is in the government service.

He attributes his success to government schemes guiding him to earn his livelihood. He maintains that if people start their business with the help of government agencies, they would also be able to stand on their feet.
