KK Chhiber, an employee with Punjab National Bank and a resident of house number 752 at Shiwalik City on the Kharar-Landran road, had gone to attend a function with his family on June 30.
On returning the next day, he allegedly found his house turned upside down. While evaluating the loss, he found that thieves had allegedly decamped with 100-gram gold, Rs 10,000 and some other stuff.
“We had informed the police immediately and they had even come to our house and gathered information. But, no FIR was registered,” Chhiber said.
However, Kharar station house officer (SHO) Vijay Kumar said: “We are investigating the case after registering the DDR and will now register the FIR.”
Sources in the SAS Nagar police said it was the most common modus operandi of the police to not register an FIR. “If they register an FIR, the crime comes on record and their area will not be listed as “peaceful” on records,” said an official from the district administration on the condition of anonymity.
He said it was a common strategy police adopted, especially in theft cases.
Significantly, townships in the Kharar area are riddled with thefts despite personal security being deployed. “But, you will rarely spot police patrolling in these areas,” said Gaurav Gupta, a resident of the area.
