A protest against setting up of a nuclear plant at Gorakhpur village was held in front of the mini-secretariat here on Monday.
The protest was led by Gorakhpur Kisan Sangharsh Samiti and members of Parmanu Virodhi Morcha and various opposition parties, including INLD, HJC-BJP, also participated.
A memorandum signed by the farmers sitting on dharna was handed over to the deputy commissioner in the name of prime minister and chief minister.
They urged the Haryana government to revoke decision on nuclear plant, else be ready to face stiff opposition from the farming community.
Hans Raj Siwach, president of Kishan Sangrash Samiti, and Subhash Punia, president of Parmanu Virodhi Morcha, said they would not allow acquisition of farmers' fertile land to set up the nuclear plant. Siwach said: "We request residents of Fatehabad and nearby areas to support us and stand up against the government."
Assuring full support to the farmers, INLD district president Nishan Singh said: "Even if the cause demands sacrifice, we will not hesitate."
Rajinder Kaka, district president of Haryana Janhit Congress, said: "Chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda wants to set up a nuclear plant in this area, which is hazardous for everyone.
Educational and developmental projects are being ignored on account of his indifferent attitude."
