Congress workers from Fatehgarh Sahib on Monday staged a protest outside the house of education minister Sikander Singh Maluka at Kansal village near here and demanded his dismissal from the cabinet for his alleged involvement in the book scam.

MP Sukhdev Singh Libra, state Congress vice-president Charanjit Singh Channi, Fatehgarh Sahib MLA Kuljit Singh Nagra, former MLA Harbans Kaur Dullo and Fatehgarh Sahib district Congress committee president Harinder Singh Bhambri led the protest.

While addressing the protesters, Channi alleged that chief minister Parkash Singh Badal was protecting the tainted minister. He said it would have been appropriate for Maluka to submit his resignation on moral grounds.

Libra said the Congress would continue the protest till Maluka was dismissed from the cabinet. He said the state Congress president and party MPs had already brought the matter to the notice of the HRD minister, who would soon send a fact-finding team.

Nagra said it was not in the interest of schoolchildren if Maluka continued in office.

The Congress leaders asked Badal to order an inquiry against Maluka by a sitting judge of the Punjab and Haryana high court.

The Congress workers raised slogans against the chief minister and the education minister and marched from the Congress Bhawan in Chandigarh to Kansal village.
