Perturbed at the exoneration of all the accused of her daughter Jyoti's alleged murder, Bhunga resident Buti Ram has demanded a CBI inquiry into the case.
Talking to HT on Thursday, Buti Ram said money and political influence played a major role in the acquittal of Doon MLA Ram Kumar Chaudhary and his accomplices.
Accusing the Panchkula police of destroying vital evidence, Buti Ram said had the investigation been fair, there was no chance for the accused to escape punishment. "The police had irrefutable evidence against the MLA and his men but it was destroyed. Odds were against us as we had neither money nor power," he added.
Buti Ram claimed that he was offered huge money to turn hostile and when he did not accept it, he was threatened with dire consequences. "Due to their (accused's) threats I was forced to change my statement in the court but later I corrected myself. I will now approach the Punjab and Haryana high court to seek a CBI inquiry," he said. "If not Chaudhary, then who killed my daughter? Let a CBI inquiry find out the truth," he added.
Jyoti was found dead in Panchkula's Sector 21 on November 22, 2012. The post-mortem report had confirmed that she had died of head injuries and that she had gone through an abortion recently. Her phone call details had exposed her connection with the Doon MLA who was arrested. In the chargesheet filed by the police, the MLA was quoted as having admitted to the murder. He had surrendered in the court in January 2013.
