Father-son duo killed over land dispute

Darshan Singh and his son Gurpal Singh, residents of Kotla Khosa village of Moga district, were allegedly murdered on Tuesday morning over a land dispute in the village.

Darshan Singh, 45, and Gurpal Singh, 23, were allegedly shot dead when they reached their fields in the morning after they were reportedly called by the accused to settle the matter amicably. Darshan Singh reportedly died on the spot while Gurpal Singh was declared brought dead in the civil hospital at Moga. The gruesome murder of the father-son duo led to a wave of anger and shock in the village and many angry residents of blocked the Moga-Ludhiana highway at the main chowk of Moga city demanding immediate arrest of the accused in the case.

“The victims had earlier approached the police over the dispute, but the police did not bother to act upon their complaint. Had the police taken timely action in the matter, lives of both could have been saved,” the protesters alleged. The blockade was lifted after about two hours after the police assured the protesters of an immediate action against the accused.

The police have registered a murder case against five persons Piara Singh, Mukhtiar Singh and Avtar Singh, all brothers, and Piara’s sons Jaspal Singh and Rachhpal Singh, all residents of Kotla Khosa, at Kot Ise Khan police station. “The police are trying to arrest the accused,” said Harpal Singh, investigating officer in the case.

According to sources, the victims and the accused had a dispute over a piece of land which had a tubewell for irrigation purpose and the village panchayat was supposed to take up the issue for settlement on Tuesday.
