The Punjab government has allotted land for burial grounds to be used by Christian and Muslim communities in SAS Nagar, Muktsar, Chamkaur Sahib and Ludhiana, Punjab Minorities Commission chairman Munawar Masih said here on Wednesday.

Masih, who was talking to mediapersons after a meeting at the forest department headquarters, said the two communities did not have burial grounds at many places. “A four-acre piece of land has been allotted for this purpose in SAS Nagar. Land has also been allotted in Muktsar and Chamkaur Sahib,” he said.

In Ludhiana, two acres have been allotted for this purpose. “Land will soon be allotted in Amritsar,” he said.

Masih also said that the state government had given due care to solve the problems faced by Christian and Muslim communities.  Masih also said that the commission had been able to dispose of 700 of the 1,100 complaints it had received so far. “Now, our main area of concern is to provide quality education to students belonging to the two minority communities. We have taken up the issue with the state government,” Masih added.

Masih added that the commission would soon approach the state government to conduct a fresh survey so that minority community members, who had not got cards to avail benefits under the atta-dal scheme, were able to receive the benefits of the scheme.  He added that several members of the two minority communities were living below poverty line.
