First for city: Chandigarh treats entire sewage

He said: “Chandigarh generates about 65 million gallons per day (MGD) of sewage. The existing sewage-treatment facility is 56.25 MGD. With the new plant that can treat 11 MGD (50 MLD) of sewage, Chandigarh has achieved a first.”
The adviser said the administration was empowering the municipal corporation (MC) by transferring various departments to it. He lauded the MC for improving the infrastructure facilities for water supply and sewage disposal. “It is good step that operation and maintenance work of the plant has been handed over to the constructing agency for 10 years,” Sharma said.
Mayor Subhash Chawla said, “We generally appreciate the best projects in foreign countries. But my last visit to Israel proved that in the sewage-treatment system we are the best city.”
MC commissioner VP Singh said the plant was constructed using the state-of-the-art sequential batch reactor technology in 24 months. “The treated water from the plant will be no less in quality to that of tertiary-treated water and will be supplied for the irrigation purpose,” Singh said.
Among those present on the occasion were area councillor Devesh Moudgil, UT finance secretary VK Singh, home secretary Anil Kumar, MC joint commissioner Rajiv Gupta and chief engineer SS Bidda.
