A Rupnagar court on Friday sentenced five people to life imprisonment for murdering one Teja Singh at Kotla Nihang village near Rupnagar in 2007.
The court, however, acquitted other eight accused, including former SHO Balwant Singh Majithia.
Teja Singh was killed and Jaswinder Singh was seriously injured, when they were attacked by some persons with sharp-edged weapons at Kotla Nihang village on December 2, 2007.
Police had registered a case under sections 302, 307, 324, 148, 149 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the accused.
Later, the court had also included the then SHO, Rupnagar, Balwant Singh Majithia in the FIR after the complainant Jaswinder Singh alleged that he (Majithia) was also involved.
After the completion of the trial, Rupnagar sessions judge Amarjot Bhatti convicted the accused Harinder Singh, Manjit Singh, Bhupinder Singh, Amarjit Jolly and Mohinder Singh and sentenced them to life imprisonment under section 302 of the IPC. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 each on the accused.
The court also sentenced each accused to seven years' imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on each accused.
The court also sentenced the accused to three years' imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 3,000 on each accused under Section 148 of the IPC.
The court further sentenced each accused to three years' imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 3,000 under Section 324 of the IPC.
All sentences shall run concurrently.
The court acquitted the other accused, including Sohan Singh, Sandeep Singh, Harpreet Singh, Gagandeep Singh, Rajesh, Bikram Singh, Lakhwinder Singh and former SHO Balwnt Singh Majithia.
