Dense fog engulfed the city on Thursday, reducing the visibility to less than 50 metres at 8.30am and similar conditions prevailed throughout the day forcing cancellation of flights and delay in trains.
Among the 12 operational flights from the city, only two operated and different trains were also running behind schedule by several hours, including Delhi-Kalka Shatabdi that was delayed by over two-and-a-half hours.
The two flights which operated from the city airport were Indigo's Chandigarh-Mumbai flight that departed from the city as per schedule at 12.20pm. SpiceJet Chandigarh-Delhi flight also operated as per schedule and departed at 5.10 pm.
Meanwhile, all flights of Jet Airways, GoAir and Air India remained cancelled.
Airport director HS Toor said, “The visibility in the morning was less than a kilometre. It improved later, but only marginally. We haven't rescheduled any of the flights and operations will depend upon day-to-day condition of the weather.”
A similar scenario prevailed with the trains where some were running behind schedule by even 12 hours. The morning Shatabdi from Delhi arrived over two hours late in the city than its scheduled arrival of 11.05 am.
Due to the fog the temperature also dropped. The maximum temperature was recorded at 20.7°C while the minimum was recorded at 7.8°C.
All flights of Jet Airways, Air India and GOAir cancelled.

Forecast for next 3 days
Weather would be mainly dry during the next 48 hours and light rain or thundershowers could occur thereafter. Fog/shallow fog may occur in the tricity during the next 36 hours and may decrease thereafter.
Advisory to be followed while travelling in fog
Drive with lights on low beam. High beams will only be reflected back off the fog and actually impair visibility even more
Reduce your speed and watch your speedometer. Fog creates a visual illusion of slow motion when you may actually be speeding
Listen for traffic you cannot see. Open your window a little, to hear better
Use wipers and defrosters as necessary for maximum visibility
Use the right edge of the road or painted road markings as a guide
Be patient. Do not pass lines of traffic.
Do not stop on a freeway or heavily travelled road. If your car stalls or becomes disabled, turn your vehicle's lights off, and take your foot off of the brake pedal. People tend to follow tail lights when driving in fog. Move away from the vehicle to avoid injury.
