Following CM's assurance in murder case, kins perform last rites

Following an assurance from chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar that the probe into the murder of a 25-year-old man who was shot on Thursday will be expedited, the family members cremated him on Sunday.

Neeraj Kumar, who was witness to the murder of his cousin, was killed outside his house in the Vikas Colony locality in the city on December 18.

Though the victim was provided with security cover, but at the time of the incident, the guards were allegedly not around him.
According to the deceased's family, three persons came on a motorcycle and fired at Neeraj.

He received three injuries on head and chest from gunshots fired from close range and died on the spot.

As the criminals managed to flee from the spot without any resistance, the crime raised fingers at the security arrangements.

Later, the body was taken to the Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College Hospital for a postmortem examination.

Agitated over the police's failure in guarding the victim, the family members refused to cremate the body till the culprits were arrested.

BJP's legislator from Gharaunda (in Karnal district) Harvinder Kalyan, a Ror, had come in support of his community members for a justice.

CM Khattar who was in the city today, directed the police officials to expedite investigation in the case.

Khattar told reporters here on Sunday that prima facie it seemed to be a well-planned crime and a member of the deceased was also gunned down.

"Police is investigating the matter and they have asked to arrest the culprits," CM said.

The case: Neeraj (25) was shot dead outside his house at Vikas Colony by three persons on Thursday. He was a key witness to the murder of his cousin Amit Kumar alias Kala of Phoosgarh village, located in the outskirts of the city, in January last year at Sector 6 here.

In Neeraj murder case, the Karnal police registered a case against Neeraj Poonia, a history-sheeter, Sandeep Poonia and their mother, and three others from Phoosgarh. The police have also announced a cash reward of Rs 5 lakh for any information about the main accused Neeraj Punia.
