Former chief justice of India, MM Punchhi died on Wednesday evening. His family members said he suffered a cardiac arrest on Tuesday morning and was admitted to Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh.
He breathed his last at8:25 pm on Wednesday evening at the hospital. His last rites will take place on Thursday at sector-25 crematorium in Chandigarh.
He lived in Chandigarh, and is survived by two sons and two daughters. One of his daughters is married to Chandigarh BJP chief Sanjay Tandon.
Justice (retd) Punchhi was appointed Chief Justice of India in January 1998 and retired the same year in October. He was elevated to Supreme Court in 1989.
He was born in 1933, at Pakpattan, now in Pakistan. Though briefly, he also taught law at Panjab University, Chandigarh. He practiced at Punjab and Haryana high court and later appointed an additional judge in 1979 at the same court.
