Former Congress minister Harnek Singh Gharuan on Monday joined the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) along with his supporters in the presence of party president and deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal.

Other Akali leaders who were present on the occasion included Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, Tota Singh, Bal-want Singh Ramoowalia, Prem Singh Chandumajra and NK Sharma.

According to Akali leaders, Gharuan, who was a minister in the Harcharan Singh Brar-led Congress government, has a strong hold in the Kharar and Mohali areas of Anandpur Sahib parliamentary constituency. He was a PPP candidate from Kharar constituency in the 2012 elections and lost.

Welcoming Gharuan and his supporters into the party, Sukhbir said people were joining the SAD as its leaders were more committed and easily accessible.

Gharuan said he was impressed by the initiatives like Progressive Punjab Industrial and Agricultural summits taken by the SAD-BJP government to ensure the overall development of the state.
