A route permit is withdrawn from Jalandhar-based Kartar Bus Service of former Punjab Congress minister Avtar Henry.

The Punjab and Haryana high court on Thursday cancelled the company's permit for the route connecting Talwara, Ferozepur, Jalandhar, Dharamkot, and Moga. A court led by justice K Kannan took the decision while allowing a petition that Hoshiarpur-based Shankar Bhagwan Bus Service had filed in 2007. The detailed judgment is yet to be released.

Appearing for the petitioner company, senior advocate HS Sawhney contended that the rival, Kartar Bus Service, had been allotted the route permit illegally in 2004, since it was a big transport concern holding the permits for many other routes in the state. Promoting big transport companies and granting them more routes would only build unfair monopolies in the market, the counsel argued.

He submitted that the company's monopoly was affecting not only the smaller transport firms but also the quality of service to the public because of the absence of competition.
