A former councillor of Morinda and his wife were killed when their car fell into the Bhakra canal, 6 km from here on Wednesday afternoon.

However, the locals saved their daughter.

Bharat Bhushan Balli (60), along with his wife Suman (55) and daughter Parul, was on his way from Morinda to the Naina Devi temple in Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh. Around 1.45 pm, when they reached the bridge of the Bhakra canal situated on the Rupnagar-Morinda road near Behrampur Zimidari village, the car suddenly fell into the canal.

Locals managed to rescue Parul, but her parents could not be saved.

On getting the information, senior police officials, including Rupnagar superintendent of police (investigation) Harmeet Singh Hundal, deputy superintendent of police Harbir Singh Atwal and Singh-Bhagwantpur SHO Dharampal, also reached the spot.

Later, the car, along with the two bodies, was retrieved from the canal. Parul was admitted to the local civil hospital.
Balli had unsuccessfully contested the last municipal council election from ward no 7 of Morinda.
