A former student of DAV College, Sector 10, was stabbed when members of two student bodies clashed at the college on Thursday.
Sachin Nehra (21), a leader of Hindustan Student Association (HSA) and a former student of the college, was admitted to Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) with stab wounds.
The police arrested Pardeep Katkar of Indian National Student Organisation (INSO), who had passed out from the college in 2009, for allegedly stabbing Nehra.
As per the police, supporters of HSA and INSO entered into an argument over garnering support of freshers. The HSA supporters accused their rivals of intimidating freshers, who were with them (HAS). Soon, a fight ensued outside the auditorium of the college, in which sharp-edged weapons, batons, flower pots and bricks were freely used. The police said they were trying to procure the CCTV camera footage to identify the accused.
The Sector 3 station house officer (SHO), Ranjeet Singh Dhillon, said preliminary investigations suggest that Pardeep Katkar, a resident of Mansa Devi Complex and supporter of INSO, had stabbed Nehra in the chest and arm. He said Katkar had passed out from the same college in 2009, whereas injured Sachin Nehra had completed his graduation from the college last year. Both Katkar and Nehra were on the college premises to rope in freshers in the respective student bodies.
Dhillon said a case under Sections 147,148,149, 323, 307 and 506 of the IPC had been registered at the Sector 3 police station on the statement of Harjeet Mann, a HSA supporter. "INSO leader Pardeep Katkar has been arrested in the case," he said.
An eyewitness to the clash, Neeraj Kharb, said INSO supporters had come in two cars, which they parked outside the college. "They entered the college and attacked the HSA supporters with swords, batons and rods," he said.
Student election was bone of contention
The police said the clash took place due to rivalry between the two student bodies. The immediate provocation was winning over the freshers, as both the factions were trying to woo the fresher students.
Accused whisks away from hospital, arrested in evening
