Four city fencers – Kajal, Kashish, Rita Yadav and Udaivir Singh – have made it to the Indian junior (under-20) team for the Asian Junior and Cadet Fencing Championship that will be held in Abu Dhabi, UAE, in February next year.

A total of 24 players (12 boys and 12 girls) will represent the country in the individual and team categories of the three fencing events, namely Foil, Sabre and Epee. Every team includes four players.

While Kajal and Kashish will be the part of the girls’ Foil team, Rita will compete in the Sabre event. Udaivir will compete in the boys’ Epee event. For all the four, it will be their first international tournament.

“Playing for the country has been our main goal and we are happy that the dream is going to get fulfilled. Now our main aim is to win a medal at the Asian event,” said Kashish and Kajal while talking to HT.

The four fencers have been selected on the basis of their individual performances in the junior national meet held in Chhattisgarh earlier this year.

While Kajal and Kashish had won a bronze medal each in Foil, besides the team gold, Rita had won a silver medal each in Sabre individual and team events. Udaivir had won individual silver in Epee.

While 15- year- old Kajal is a student of Class 11th at Gover nment Model Senior Secondary School (GMSSS), Sector 10, 14-year-old Kashish studies in Class 9th at Chitkara International School-25; Rita (19) is a B.Sc. final year student at Post Graduate Government College for Girls, Sector 11, while Udaivir is pursuing B.Tech. from Punjabi University, Patiala.

All the four are trainees of Charanjeet Kaur, the physical education teacher-cum-fencing coach at GMSSS-10. Besides, Udaivir also trains under coach Mohit Ashwini at National Institute for Sports, Patiala.
