Four minors, including a girl, have been detained in connection with a daylight burglary at Phase 7, SAS Nagar, on Wednesday.
The minors, all of whom are reportedly between 8 and 12 years, allegedly struck a locked house in Phase 7. They were allegedly caught after a neighbour, Manjit Singh, spotted them leaving the house with a suspicious-looking bag and confronted them, after which he alerted the police.
Police sources said they found that the locks of the house were broken and the house was ransacked. The police have allegedly recovered bathroom fittings and several sharp-edged weapons from the suspects. Sources also claimed that the four were also held the night before for allegedly stealing a mobile phone.
Talking to HT, one of the four, a rag picker, said that he was merely accompanying a friend and did not know about the planned act. However, he revealed that there were others involved in the crime but had fled the spot.
Mataur station house officer Rajiv Kumar said the matter was under investigation.
The house has remained locked since the past few months after its owners went abroad.
Meanwhile, residents in the area are beginning to feel unsafe. Manjit Singh said, "Although not much was stolen, the incident affirms that the area is unsafe as the thieves struck in broad daylight."
