Facing a severe staff crunch and continuous complaints of encroachments pouring in from various parts of the township, for the first time, SAS Nagar municipal corporation has hired a Panchkula-based private agency for removing encroachment.
The agency, Global Securex, will start commissioning from July 2.
Working round-the-clock in the town, the agency will issue notices, signed by MC officials, to violators.
The worst-affected areas in the township include Phases 1, 4, 5, 3B2, 10 and 11, where more than 1,000 illegal shops and rehris have mushroomed. Around 400 rehris alone are there in Phase 1.
MC commissioner Uma Shankar Gupta said, “The a g ency will have five-six people and their vehicles will be equipped with moder n gadgets. Hopefully, the agency will start functioning from July 2. We will also empower them to impose fine on violators, but our officers will supervise them.”
On asking, why there emerged the need to hire an agency, Gupta said, “We are short of staff and moreover the agency will be moving across the town round-the-clock. In case, they get involved in any corrupt practices, their contract will immediately be cancelled and security amount will be forfeited.”
Congress MLA Balbir Singh Sidhu said, “Encroachments have almost eroded the town and authorities have failed to remove the rampant encroachments. No effective checks are imposed. In some antiencroachment drives conducted by the MC, some shopkeepers come to know about the drive before the tehbazari staff reach the markets.”
